A sign informing passengers of the new rule has been placed in the arrivals area of Dunedin International Airport and quickly became viral.

According to the airport’s CEO, Daniel De Bono, those who wish to hug for more than 3 minutes can use the parking area.

“There are 15 minutes free there. I’ve read some studies in the past few weeks, and you only need 20 seconds to release oxytocin from a hug,” Bono said in an interview with radio RNZ.

Despite the new norm, Bono emphasized that there is no “hug police” monitoring people’s goodbyes, but it is expected that the discontent of others will be sufficient to discourage people from breaking the rule.
